Whitehouse 2005 family trip
This June we took our almost annual family trip with Beth's family. I was thrilled this year because we were going to Lake Lure, right outside of Asheville and home to some of the best hiking, biking and waterfalls in the Southeast. Beth's parents Ben and Gladys rented a beautiful house right on a golf course and about one mile from Lake Lure. It was beautiful.
The highlight (there were many) of the trip was the fact that we were celebrating Ben and Glady's 40 year anniversary. Here we are eating lunch at the famous Grove Park Inn.
Of course, you can't please all the people all of the time. Emily "smiling" for the camera.
We truly were living the Life of Reilly on this day, and Reilly thoroughly enjoy himself on the patio of the Inn.
We also managed to capture a decent group shot on the patio overlooking the Appalachian Mountains, in particular the Black Mountains right outside of Asheville.

Of course what trip to Lake Lure would be complete without a hike, really a drive and short walk, to Chimney Rock?
In addition to Chimney Rock, I talked Beth's brothers Ben, Don and Harrison into a couple of days of mountain biking. The first outing was to the much anticipated, highly OVERRATED Bent Creek area right outside of Asheville. I would not recommend this trail to anyone. Our second trip, after 2+ hours of driving brought us to Tsali, one of the most popular trails in NC and well worth the trip. We rode the 13 mile left loop which bordered Fontana Lake the majority of the way and provided beautiful views of the Great Smoky Mountain National Forest. This trail was smooth and very fast, with just about every turn having a nice bank and in many cases we were a foot or two from the lake. No one fell in and we all managed to finish the ride. It was definitely one of the better mountain bike experiences I have had in awhile.
We also did some hiking in the heart of Transylvania County, home to over 260 waterfalls, at Dupont State Forest. This place was stunning and I only wish we had more time to spend in these woods. We saw two huge waterfalls during our short hike.

All in all we had a great week, complete with excellent dinners, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, mountain biking, relaxing and enjoying each others company. I can't wait until the next one!

To get us started, I've posted a couple of pics of Reilly boy, I promise not all postings will be about Reilly. You'll also notice some links of interest on this page. One is a link to many of my photos on yahoo photos, one a link to our trailrunning and mountain biking group, the Trail Heads, one a great Triangle based mountain bike site, and last but not least, runDiabetesrun, a non-profit organization my brother Gary started. I will create another post to discuss our plans with runDiabetesrun, they are exciting!
